BOOKSHELF WINES
Our History

The Beginning
Bookshelf Wines began with a vision to create a winery that reflects the beauty of Temecula's vineyards while offering a deeper, more personal wine experience. Two winemakers, Sheila and Niles Fleege, planted the first vines on a quiet hillside near Anza, combining Sheila's love for the written word with a shared desire to cultivate something lasting.

The First Vines
Every vine was planted with purpose, knowing each season would add complexity to the story. Over time, the soil, the climate, and hands-on care gave Bookshelf wines a signature character, one that could only come from this land, these hands, and this place.

A Passion Takes Shape
While the Fleeges were building their legacy in Anza, Steve Whitaker was growing up in the small Napa town of Angwin, spending summers in grape fields and developing a deep appreciation for wine straight from the soil. Despite several career changes, he never let go of his passion. He kept experimenting, tasting, collecting, and waiting for the right moment to make his mark.

2024
In 2024, the Fleege family passed their winery and traditions to the Whitaker family, a passing of the torch rooted in shared values and mutual respect. The story didn't end. It turned a page. Under new stewardship, Bookshelf Winery carried forward everything that made it special, while beginning a chapter entirely its own.

Today
Now recognized among Temecula's most memorable wineries, Bookshelf continues to produce distinctive wines that honor California's wine culture. Production stays intentionally small because quality and authenticity demand it. Sustainable farming, hands-on winemaking, and a genuine welcome for every guest remain at the heart of everything we do.
